Pipe

Pipe generally was one of the most valuable possessions of Plains Indians. This is clearly illustrated by exquisitely crafted catlinite bowls and stunning quilled decorations typically found on the end portion of the wooden stem. There were two main types of pipes: medicine and ceremonial pipes. The "war pipe" is a particular medicine pipe with short stem, carried by war leaders or warrior society officers (society pipe-keepers) to protect warriors from their enemies while in combat. Like every other types of pipe it was regarded as "sacred" and treated with respect. Special war medicine bundles or rawhide containers were used to store and protect war pipes. Part of the ritual for activating the power of the bundle was the act of smoking tobacco in acknowledgment of the blessings and spiritual gifts that the bundle represented.
